How to Fix C4D UE4 Smoothing Groups Issue Quick and Free
C4D UE4 Smoothing Groups Issue is a wide known thing amongst Cinema 4D and Unreal Engine 4 users.
The symptom briefly is that .fbx files exported from C4D and imported to UE4 resulting a “No Smoothing Groups” error in UE4.
Cinema 4D has no smothing groups instead it uses Phong tags. Therefore you don’t have an option in .fbx export window to export smoothing groups. Altough the model is fine, UE4 brings up this error message that is actually correct and should be avoided. In Unity all work fine, I guess they use a different way to interpret 3D models during import.
The free and easy solution for C4D UE4 workflow users is to import the .fbx into Blender then:
- Go to File and Export as an .fbx
- in the .fbx export settings (bottom left corner in Blender 2.79 and I guess in all other versions below) Go to Geometries
- Go to Smoothing then pick Edge.
Done, no more issues.
