Shenmue III is the next part of the Shenmue saga and it will be released on November 19, 2019. After 18!!! years. Shenmue II was released in 2001 while the first part in 1999. Shenmue and Shenmue II were made and published by Sega and both of them were AAA games back then. Shenmue was actually the most expensive game ever created, at that time. Both games were fantastic experience and they are still solid games even in today’s standards. Obviously graphically, mostly becasue of the low-res textures and 3D models, they aren’t great today but if we go back 20 years in time we can say that those games were absolutely mindblowing and far ahead of their time. I think, the biggest mistake, which didn’t seem to be a mistake at all back then, was that Shenmue and Shenmue II were released only on Sega’s own platform: Dreamcast, and in 2002 on Xbox that actually reached a much wider audience…but No Playstation, No PC which basically meant that most gamers were locked out of this fantastic journey and therefore many people never even heard about Shenmue until 3-4 years ago.
The creators of the game started to run a Kickstarter crowdfound campaign for Shenmue III in 2015 and they managed to collect more than $6.3 million very quickly. Crowdfunding finished in 2018 and backers piled up $7.1 million total, which was enough to make Shenmue III a multi-platform game. Altough it’s a lot of money but when it comes to video game making it’s not much at all, so no open-world experience can be really made and there are also other limitations which have to be taken into account by the creators. Shenmue III is made by using Unreal Engine 4 which is one of the best video game engines. The publisher of the game is Deepsilver.
Shenmue III is created by Ys Net which is Yu Suzuki’s company.Yu Suzuki is the mastermind behind these masterpieces and also several other creators from the original Shenmue team work on Shenmue III, too. So, based on the developers it seems very promising.
If you’re interested deeper, there are lot of resources about the Shenmue games which you can read but obviously the best is if you play it. Shenmue III continues the story of I & II, which connects from the very beginning therefore it’s highly recommended to play Shenmue I & II before S3…if the storyline matters to you. If not simply just play it for fun.
It’s a good review of Shenmue I and Shenmue II in case you’d like to get a better and more complex idea about the game and its concept :
